My teacher doesn't really do many closings and openings. He generally starts class with attendance and then jumps right into the topic of the day. If the class has homework that night he will usually have it already on the board in the homework section and tells the class to write it down right away. The class is very free flowing and mostly consists of class going through different topics by the teacher asking questions and writing notes on the board. The teacher is very accessible to questions.Generally the class goes until the bell, but there isn't much of a closing activity. The class ends with different reminders for the kids. There is not much dead time, but it is hard to tell with the running dialogue between teacher and students.
Reflections:
I enjoy the teaching style of my teacher which is very interactive with discussions. There doesn't seem like there are many closing activities or summarizing of the class before the bell, but since I am not there on an everyday basis I cannot be certain that the teacher does not occasionally use exit slips or some other final activity. My teacher has a lot of energy and generally him and the students are interacting from start to finish so class usually ends pretty close to the bell. I would like to end with some sort of reflection, but i am not sure that this could happen everyday because some days may be extremely busy and you may need the entire class to complete the work of the day. I will definitely use exit slips and possibly small quizzes at the end of some classes to see what information the class has been able to remember and use. These quizzes do not have to be used as a grade necessarily because i think its more important for me to see what students dont understand and possibly go back to it or factor it back in to a lesson. These quizzes could be used as a way to decide whether a student deserves to be moved up a grade at the end of a quarter. So after observing my teacher I think he could use some sort of closing activity for his kids instead of the just stop and leave method. How ever in the end his techniques for reviewing could just be less obvious to me as an exit slip would be.
